How to Replace an Audi Key Replacement Cost G28 Engine Speed Sensor

Charles the Humble Technician shows you how to replace the G28 Engine Speed Sensor. The sensor is located at the edge of transmission over the flywheel gear. It transmits a signal to the ECU via the grey wire (T55/49), then to the tachometer in the instrument cluster.

1. Engine Speed Sensor

The sensor is located at the edge of the transmission, above the flywheel ring gear the G28 Engine Speed Sensor sends signals to ECU pin T55/49 using a grey wire. The ECU then utilizes this information to regulate the flow of fuel, timig and boost. It also sends an indication to the G5 Tachometer located in the instrument cluster.

The sensor is used as a reference point to connect with the G40 Camshaft Position Sensor. The ecu has to know when the crankshaft reached TDC, and the position of the camshaft, so that it can activate the spark and injectors.

If this sensor fails, the ECU will show a P00160 code which means the Crank Shaft and Intake Camshaft are out of sync and could indicate the chain is stretched or a jump link on the upper timing chain. However, the error code won't appear on its own, without additional information from other sensors (G4 and G40).

It's a bit tricky to test because there are different connector pins, Audi Key Replacement Cost and they all have different functions. The most effective method to test it is to measure the resistance between the ECU and the sensor. When the sensor is fully operational, it should read about 1000 ohms. If you're having issues with this part, check for signs of oil or coolant in the connector bay.

2. Injectors

Yesterday, when accelerating from highway paytoll at full speed I noticed a massive decrease in power. It was like the engine had run out of gas. Or my injectors weren't firing. I took out the spark plugs this morning, three were drenched in gasoline and the fourth was unclean. When I crank the engine without sparks i put tissue on the top of each hole in the injector, the 3 drenched with gazoline leap out, however the 4th stay shut. I tested the ground connection of ECU pins 14,30 and 48/55. I got zero ohm. I'm assuming that the issue is somewhere else.

I also tried to reset the PID but with no luck. The car will start when the G28 is unplugged and runs fine when it is connected however it has the intermittent misfire issue at higher RPM. The coolant sensor (G62) even when it is unplugged, shows temperatures of -49c. Also i noticed that the gauge for oil pressure in the cockpit is showing 2 bar, whereas the actual pressure is 0.0 when i rev the engine.

I'm not sure what to do, but i think i've pretty much eliminated everything else. But i am afraid I may have missed something. Please let me know if you have any ideas! TIA!

3. Fuel Pump

The fuel pump of the g28 receives signals from the RPM sensor. The GM-style transmitter functions similarly to the G4 sender and both work on the 80,100,200, UrS, and RS2 vehicles. You can easily find a spare in a wrecking shop or parts store. It is easy to test them - just switch your DMM into resistance mode and measure the distance between pins 1 and 2 (with the bump on the connector's edge facing upwards). They should be infinite Ohms.

4. ECU

Our 20vt turbo (3B AAN, ABY and ADU) engines have an ECU that must know the position and speed of the crankshaft to make decisions regarding timing of the fuel injectors, etc. It makes use of a Crank Position Sensor G4 and an Engine Speed Sensor G28 to achieve this.
